Intuitive Inspiration

Intuitive Inspiration

In 2016, there was a comprehensive exhibition on Alexander Girard, a US architect and designer, curated by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany. I saw the exhibition 3 times, because I was so excited by his genius sense of color. The following Spring, I traveled to Alexander Girard’s hometown of Santa Fe to meet his family and see his Folk-Art Collection. He created his own design universe out of colors, and I was motivated to work with Vitra and the Girard family for my Spring/Summer 2018 collection dedicated to his work.

Inspiration is something that just happens, you cannot schedule it. The selection of an object is intuitive, I let my feelings make the choice. In this very moment, a work can inspire a dress, a bag, a fabric. This is how objects become messengers between creators who never met.

When I design clothes there needs to be an ease, the more I was studying how Alexander Girard was designing and discovering what his approach was, I felt a strong connection. Girard is widely known for his delightful creative vision and ‘aesthetic functionalism’, something I strive for in each piece I design. My Spring/Summer 2018 collection, inspired by his works, was one of the most fun and freeing experiences I have had as a designer in translating his whimsical work into a joyful and wearable wardrobe.
